Jefferson Memorial Forest Summer Camp Programs
The Forest now offers programs for ages 5 to 15.
Forest Camp Adventures
These camps are for children ages 7 to 12. This day camp provides children an immersion experience into the natural world. They will take on the roles of naturalist, scientist, and explorer as they discover new things about the forest, and the creatures that inhabit it. By combining educational activities and learning experiences with traditional summer camp fun, your child will have an educational adventure to remember for a lifetime.
Camp activities include nature study, crafts, science experiments, games, journaling, hikes and animal contact with the Forest’s education animals. All campers receive a forest water bottle. Each session runs for one week. Each day begins promptly at 9:00 AM and ends at 4:00 PM.
Forest Adventures
Is your child an explorer? Do they crave adventure? They are sure to find it here! Campers will explore the trails deep in the forest, climb our alpine tower, and learn rappelling skills. They will also learn skills such as fire and shelter building and using a map and compass.
Dates: June 2nd– 6th or July 7th-11th
Creature Trekking
Campers will explore a variety of habitats and learn about the creatures that call these places home. Campers will travel though the forest, along the forest edge, across fields and meadows, into streams, and even take a field trip to Otter Creek Park, where they will meet creatures in a cave habitat! Campers will learn what to look for when tracking animals, and what the population of animals can tell us about ourselves and how we affect the world around us.
Dates: June 9th – 13th or July 14th – 18th
Aquatic Habitats
Discover the exciting world within a pond, lake, stream and river. Campers will explore a lake while canoeing, hike through a forest to a winding stream, seine and use nets to collect specimens, and view the many tiny creatures they collect on our videoscope. This camp includes several field trips that allow campers to explore the Floyd’s Fork and Ohio River watersheds. Also, campers will be engaged in crafts, journaling and science experiments. Life preservers will be provided and trained staff will accompany the campers in a 1:3 ratio for our canoe excursion to Long Run Park. Parents are welcome to join their child for this field trip.
Dates: June 16th – 20th or July 21st– 25th
Forest Quest Eco-Challenge
Ages: 13 to 15
This camp introduces the camper to safe, outdoor adventures. We begin the week with team challenges designed to teach the fundamentals of working together. Days two and three involve learning climbing and belaying on our 50-foot alpine tower, techniques for ascending ropes and crossing crevasses, and a day of canoeing. On Thursday, we travel to Mammoth Cave National Park and climb, crawl and get dirty while learning caving techniques on the Introduction to Caving tour. We’ll camp out at Mammoth Cave Thursday night. Friday, we’ll give back to the park through a small service project before returning to the Forest. Campers are expected to work well in a small group and take responsibility for their learning by actively participating.
Dates: June 23rd – June 27th
